ويعد الشافعي أول من كتب في الأصول، إذ أملى فيه رسالته المشهورة ، ثم نما العلم بعد ذلك وتميز فيه أسلوبان أو طريقان: طريق المتكلمين وطريق فقهاء الحنفية ، ويميل المتكلمون في دراستهم إلى الاستدلال العقلي ما أمكن اما فقهاء الحنفية فكتابتهم أمس بالفقه وأليق بفروعه، وتعد كتابة الغزالي - في نظرنا- من أفضل ما كتب في علم الأصول لأنه جمع بين رسوخ القدم في علمالكلام والفقه الشافعي.
وقد حاولت في هذا البحث ان أعرض دراسة المعنى عند الأصوليين وأعرف بها من وجهة نظر لغوية.
