تبدأ الفترة التي اختصها البحث بالدراسة من سنة (293 هـ/ 905م)، حيث تولى أبو الهيجاء عبد الله بن حمدان حكم الموصل عندما عينه الخليفة العباسي المكتفي بالله والياً عليها، وتنتهي بسيطرة كربوقا السلجوقي على الموصل سنة (489 هـ/ 1096م). فيكون البحث قائماً على دراسة أوضاع الإمارة الحمدانية والإمارة العقيلية وعلاقتهما مع الخلافة العباسية.
وقد كانت الإمارة الحمدانية أول إمارة عربية تنشأ في منطقة عربية، بعد أن تغلغل نفوذ الأجانب من أتراك وديالمة على السلطة المركزية في بغداد - مركز الخلافة العباسية - فكان لهم الأمر والنهي ولم يكن للخليفة العباسي حول ولا قوة.
واحتلت الإمارة الحمدانية والعقيلية مكانة بارزة في التاريخ، وظهرت ملامحهما العربية الأصيلة بما قامتا به من مختلف ألوان النشاط سواء الحربي منها، أو الحضاري والثقافي.
انعقد البحث على ستة فصول تناول الفصل الأول الظروف الممهدة لظهور الحمدانيين على مسرح الأحداث من سنة (270 - 293هـ)، وعالج الفصل الثاني حكم الحمدانيين للموصل من (293هـ/367م). أما الفصل الثالث فقد تناول فيه العلاقات السياسية لإمارة الموصل في عهد الحمدانيين. وعالج الفصل الرابع حكم العقيليين للموصل سنة (380هـ/990م). وتناول الفصل الخامس علاقات العقيليين الخارجية فتناول العلاقات مع الخلافة العباسية التي تميزت بأنها علاقة ودية. وتناول الفصل السادس الأخير الجانب الثقافي والاقتصادي للعلاقات بين الموصل والخلافة العباسية.
