تعتبر القلويدات من أكثر النواتج الطبيعية الثانوية شيوعا في المملكة النباتية. كانت النباتات هي المصدر الرئيسي للقلويدات في بدايات اكتشافها, ومع التقدم العلمي وتطور طرق الفصل وطرق التعرف على المركبات تم عزل وتحديد البنية الكيميائية لعدة قلويدات تم عزلها من كائنات حية مختلفة تعيش على الأرض أو في المياه مثل البرمائيات والمفصليات والثدييات والحشرات والأسماك والإسفنجيات والفطريات والبكتيريا. وتوجد القلويدات في معظم اجزاء النبات, فتوجد في الأوراق مثل النيكوتين, وفي اللحاء مثل السينكوينين و الكوينين وفي البذور مثل الستريكنين وفي الجذور مثل الروالفين. وتم التطرق إلى بحث الإنشاء والنشوء الحيوي لغالبية القلويدات الشائعة في الاستعمال الطبي. وقد عرف الإنسان منذ الأزل القلويدات وأهميتها الطبية وكذلك سميتها الشديدة. وربما استعملها في تسميم رؤوس السهام مثل الكيورار أو لإعداد شراب سام قاتل لتنفيذ حكم الاعدام, كما حصل مع الفيلسوف اليوناني الشهير سقراط بشربه قدح من الشوكران. والقلويدات عبارة عن مركبات حلقية تحتوي على ذرة النيتروجين وينحصر تواجدها في الكائنات الحية. وفي هذا الكتاب.... وجدت المتعة في جمال اللغة العربية ومرونتها من الاشتقاق والتصريف والنحو. راجيا أن يكون هذا الكتاب مساهمة قي اثراء المكتبة العلمية العربية.
