حين تحاصر الوحدة الإنسان، يخلو زمانه من الآخر، ويقتصر مكانه عليه، وفي هكذا حال، كثيراً ما يعكف على ذاته يحادثها ويحاورها ويفتح كوّةً في جدار الحصار الذاتي يطل عبرها على أزمنة وأمكنة ماضية، ولكن "هي" بطلة "بورتريه الوحدة" تفتح كوّةً على أزمنة وأمكنة آتية فيما يشبه أحلام اليقظة، فتصنع في مخيلتها بورتريه ملون يضم أصدقاء، وحبيب لا وجود له إلا في عقلها الباطن تحاوره عبر رسائل تبعث له بـ"إيميلات" رسائل الكترونية وتسميه ماجد فتتخذ من هذا الأسلوب تعويض عن حاضر مُرخٍ سدوله كليل ساكنْ كحالها فلا يبقى لها إلا المخيلة للهروب من الواقع. أو ربما كانت خشبة خلاص تتشبث بها البطلة، فتغالب الوحدة والأيام المتشابهة.
لقد أجاد الروائي "محمد حامد" في استخدام تقنيات متعددة للتعبير عن حالة واحدة، فهناك السرد بصيغة المتكلم ما يجعل النص قابلاً لاحتمال الإعترافات والسيرة الذاتية، إضافة إلى المونولوج الداخلي، فضلاً عن تقنية الحلم بواسطة صيغة المستقبل ليكشف للقارىء أحلام "مي" ومحاولتها العبور فوق الفراغ الروحي والنفسي الذي يؤرق حياتها.
ومن بورتريه الوحدة نقرأ بعضاً من رسالة جاءت تحت الرقم (81): تقول "مي" " ... إبعث لي برسائل كثيرة حتى يكتظ بريدي وأعجز عن تفسير ما يحدث، وأتشجع على البقاء، البقاء يا سيدي هو ما يجعلني الآن في الجزيرة التي تفصل مساري الطريق، (...) كل ما يشغلني الآن أن أستجمع قوتي وأفرد ذراعي وأحاول ...".
"كلّما ضاقت بي الحياة / التقطت لي صورة، / أفتش فيها عن شيء يشبهني، / وفي كل مرة أكتشف شخصًا آخر. / حينها أبحث عن مكان لم تطأه قدماي من قبل / في حديقة منزلنا الخلفية / وأدسّ الصورة تحت شجرة ما، / ومنذ دسست أولّ صورة / جسدت حالة الضيق التي تداهمني / وكل شجرة أدسّ تحتها صورة لي / يتغير لون أوراقها".
