هذا الكتاب ثمرة سنوات عديدة من البحث والتأمل وقد عكفت فترة طويلة من الزمن على مطالعة مؤلفات الزعيم الشاب، وقراءة خطبه ومقالاته ورسائله إلى مدام "جولييت آدم"، وأحاديثه إلى مختلف الصحف الأوربية، وما كتبه عنه أخوه على فهمى كامل، والأستاذ الكبير عبد الرحمن الرافعى. وقد حرصت على أن أمهد للبحث بدراسة حالة مصر وأوربا فى تلك المرحلة التى ضحى فيها مصطفى كامل بشبابه وصحته لينقذ وطنه من براثن الاستعمار وصنائعه من الحكام.
وكلما توغلت فى دراسة الوثائق الوفيرة عن هذا الوطنى الغيور تجلت لى عظمة شخصيته وزاد اعجابى بسيرته وتقديرى لبطولته. وإنى لأسائل نفسى: ترى هل جاء كتابى عن الفقيد من وحى خاطرى، أم شاركنى هو فى تحريره وإملائه؟ ومهما يكن من الأمر، فإن الايام التى قضيتها فى صحبته كانت أياماً حافلة بالنشوة والتحمس تارة وبالقلق والألم تارة أخرى.
ألفت هذا الكتاب باللغة الفرنسية لنيل الدكتوراه من السربون. ولما كان غرضى أن أجعله أقرب تناولا لدى الجمهور- وخاصة لدى شباب المعاهد والجامعات- رأيت أن أقدم ترجمته مخففة من الحواشى والتعليقات والمراجع التى تحتوى عليها النسخة الفرنسية، مؤملا أن يتسنى لى نشر النص الأصلى فى فرصة قريبة.
