ربما يكون هذا أول كتاب يبحث صعود وسقوط برنامج إدارة عائدات النفط في تشاد الذي كان مقصودا به التعاون مع البنك الدولي لضمان أن أموال النفط ستفيد التشاديين، لكن هذه الأموال استخدمت في شراء السلاح وشراء الولاء، وفي النهاية أدت الحرب الأهلية إلى انهيار الاتفاق وأصبح بمقدور الحكومة استخدام تلك الأموال لخوض حربها الأهلية. والواقع أن تحذيرات تطوير النفط من جانب العديد من المنظمات غير الحكومية تحققت. وكذلك يبحث الكتاب وأثر الاستثمار الصيني على القارة. ولا يستنتج جازفنيان أن الاستثمار الجديد أسوأ من الاستثمار الغربي، لكنه يتبنى وجهة نظر أكثر حيادية وموضوعية مفادها ان تلك العلاقات تكافلية ولا تختلف كثيرا عن جهود الغرب لضمان النفط الإفريقي. ولجازفنيان كذلك رؤى متعمقة لافتة للانتباه بشأن كيفية تأثير نموذج الاستثمار الصيني على مقاربة البلدان الأخرى للنفط الإفريقي كالهند وكوريا الجنوبية وجنوب إفريقيا.
