يعالج هذا الكتاب المحطات الرئيسية فى تاريخ مصر الحديث ، فيعتبر حملة نابليون على مصر آواخر القرن الثامن عشر بداية الصحوة ، ويقدم بإنصاف عصر محمد على ودروسه فى التاريخ المصرى وبروز دور علماء الأزهر .
ويستعرض الكتاب العلاقات الخارجية لمحمد على وخصوصا مواقفه من المماليك والسلطان والقوى الأوروبية وحرصه على أن يستقل بمصر عن تركيا.
كما سجل نقطة مهمة وهى أن مصر الحديثة قد بنيت من أجل الجيش فلما اضمحل الجيش فى عهد خلفائه تراجعت صحوة مصر.
كما تناول مشروع قناة السويس بما له وما عليه وأنصف إسماعيل باشا وقدم للاحتلال البريطانى لمصر ، مركزا على أهمية الثورة العرابية فى الحركة الدستورية والوطنية التى اشتعلت بعد ذلك مع ثورة 1919 التى عالجها بإسهاب.
ركز الكتاب على فظائع الاحتلال البريطانى فى دنشواى والإسماعيلية ثم معاهدة 1936 والحالة الديمقراطية والسياسية تحت الاحتلال ، وجهاد مصر من اجل الاستقلال وعقم الأمم المتحدة فى المسألة المصرية وفى مسألة فلسطين ، حيث ناقش أول مواجهة عسكرية عربية أبلى فيها الجيش المصرى وتعرض للمؤامرات العربية.
