تأتي أهمية علم الكيمياء لإرتباطه الوثيق والمباشر بالعديد من العلوم الحياتية الهامة مثل الصيدلة، والطب، والهندسة، والزراعة وغيرها؛ وهو علم يدرس خواص المواد وتأثير بعضها على بعض، وسرعة حدوث هذا التأثير وأثر ذلك على الإنسان والبيئة.
ولقد كان للعلماء العرب والمسلمين في الماضي القريب دور هام وتاريخي في مجال الكيمياء، وكانت مؤلفاتهم تدرس في الجامعات الأوروبية، وشكلت أبحاثهم ونظرياتهم أساس النهضة المعاصرة، والكيمياء اللاعضوية بالذات علم واسع يصعب تحديدة تماماً فهو يمتد ليشمل أحياناً بعض جوانب الكيمياء غير العضوية والفيزيائية وهو كالعلوم الأخرى في نمو مضطرد يجب أن تتغير نظرة الباحث فيه إلى نتائج العلمية بما ينسجم مع تقدم وسائل البحث وتطورها.
يشتمل هذا الكتاب على التسلسل التاريخي لمفهوم الذرة ونظرياتها وبعض الحقائق التجريبية التي أدت إلى معرفة تركيب الذرة الداخلي، وهو يتناول بالشرح والتفصيل نظرية بور، ونظرية الميكانيكا الموجية، والدالة الموجية لشرود نجر، والأعداد الكمية وغيرها من نظريات تختص بالتركيب الذري، كما يحتوي الكتاب على شرح مفصل عن التفاعلات في المحاليل المائية والغازات.
وقد حاول المؤلف عرض موضوعات الكتاب بشكل جذاب وبسيط يسهل على الطالب فهمه وإدراكه وإستيعاب ما فيه، وتم عرض المحتويات مدعمة بالصور والأشكال والرسومات التوضيحية وبطريقة متدرجة.
