كانت مُنى لا تزالُ غافية، حين نهضتُ في الصباح الباكر على زقزقةِ العصافير فوق الشجرة، عشراتُ الأنغام، تتآلفُ، وتنطلِقُ عَذبَة، تستقبل نهاراً جديداً من أيام الحياة.
هزعتُ إلى الطاقة السرّية - طاقتي - وتَسلَّلت منها إلى الخارج، ثمّ رُحتُ اتسلق جذع السنديانة... و... هوب... قفزتُ على أقربِ عُصفور، وكان عُصفور دورياً، رمادي اللون، صغير الحجم، لم يحسب المسكين لحضوري حساباً.
وكان مرتاحاً، مرحاً فوق الغصن، بعيداً عن رفاقه وفاجأتُه، فأطلق صرخةً حادّة، ثمّ هرب وطار إلى شجرة مجاورة، صرخته أفزعت رفاقه فرقَّتِ الأجنحة، وكأنَّها جناحٌ واحدٌ، وحلَّقت بعيداً.
ومع أنّي لم أوقَّفْ بصيد واحدٍ من العصافير، إلاّ أن شعوراً من الزَهْوِ رافقني طوال النهار: فأنا قويّ، وقوّتي أخافت سرباً من العصافير.
رواية مستوحاة من حقيقة وواقع تنتقل أحداثه من زمن السلام إلى أيّام الحرب في لبنان. وتدور القصّة على لسان الهرّ زيكو، لتعكس الصداقة المميّزة مع منى، ابنة الكاتبة. تُرجم الكتاب إلى عدّة لغات وحاز على جائزة الهيئة اللبنانية لكتب الأولاد. الكتاب مدرج أيضاً على لائحة شرف ايبي (IBBI).
