يتضمّن كتاب المجسطي لأبي الوفاء البوزجاني (من علماء القرن الرابع الهجري) ثلاثة مجالات رئيسية؛ مجال الرياضيات وهو الأهم، لما جاء به من إسهامات في عِلْمَي المثلثات المُسَطَّحة والكروية. وإن كثيراً من القوانين الحديثة في حساب المثلثات ترجع لأبي الوفاء؛ ففي مجسطيه أخذت «الدّالات» المثلثية شكلاً جديداً (حديثاً) ويُعتبر هذا التقدم نقطة تحول مهمة وكبيرة في تاريخ هذا الفرع من الرياضيات، وقد شرحها المحقق (علي موسى) باختصار في خلاصة الكتاب. وبوضعه للشكل الظلي الكروي وتطبيقاته له في الفلك جعل (أبو الوفاء) الظل (وتمامه) مشهوراً مثل الجيب (وتمامه)، وبالتالي كذلك القاطع (وتمامه)، وقد اعترف البيروني له بهذا الفضل؛ ومجال الرصد والآلات الفلكية، حيث ابتكر لهذا الغرض آلات وصفها في مجسطيه (وهي مشروحة في المقدمات مع رسومات)؛ ومجال علم الفلك النظري، حيث قدّم المحقّق شرحاً لحركة الشمس مع رسمٍ لها، كما وصفها المؤلف في مجسطيه، وذلك لتكون توطئة لتخيّل حركات الكواكب الأخرى.
كتابٌ يُحَقَّقُ كاملاً، لأول مرة، فيسَلّطُ الضوء، على عالِمٍ تميّز بابتكاراته وشروحاته، إضافة إلى براعته في الرصد والتأليف والتدريس، فحاز، بجدارة، لقب «المهندس».
