يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب أن "الخواطر العراب" موضوع للفهم أكثر مما هو للحفظ يُنظر فيه إلى تنشئة التلميذ على الإعتداد أن علوم اللغة ومن بينها النحو هي علوم خاضعة لأحكام العقل، لذلك يحظّ على أن ينشأ التلميذ على الفهم في النحو وحفظ مفردات اللغة وشواهدها البليغة وأن يصلح عن طريق العقل والنقل كل ما يحتاج إلى الإصلاح في هذه المسائل ...
يتألف الكتاب من خمسة أقسام هي دليل الطالب في مادة (النحو والإعراب) جاء القسم الأول في "موضوع النحو وأبحاثه" والقسم الثاني في "أنواع الجملة وما تتألف منه وفيما يطرأ عليها ويعرض لأجزائها وأحكام كل ذلك على التفصيل" فيما خصص القسم الثالث لـ "أفعال الشروع" وبحث القسم الرابع "في التوابع المعنوية واللفظية" وختم بالقسم الخامس "أبواب متفرقة": في الندى والمنادى وفي الترخيم والندبة وفي القسم وأحكامه وأفعال المدح والذم وفعل التعجب ... وغيرها.
