يوثّق هذا الكتاب سير الحياة اليومية في الإمبراطورية الرومانية على مدى ثلاثة قرون (من القرن الرابع إلى القرن السابع الميلادي). إذ بسقوط روما على يد البرابرة عام 476م، توجهت الأنظار نحو القسطنطينية، عاصمة إمبراطورية الشرق: هنا فرض الأباطرة الديانة المسيحية على العباد، لتملي بدورها تعاليمها وأعرافها على الناس. أقيمت الأديرة في كل مكان وانتشرت الرهبنة بأشكال مغالية وأصبحت ظاهرة لا يضاهيها إلا انتشار ظاهرة تحكّم الغلمان بمقاليد الأمور في البلاط. كان الفقر المدقع يدفع الأبوين نحو تصرفات مشينة، وكان أحد سبل التخلص من ذلك إهمال الأبناء. أما القضاء، فعلى الرغم من فرض جستنيان قوانينه الشهيرة، كان للولاة والحكام في أقاصي البلاد سلطة شبه مطلقة، يحكمون وفق هواهم ومصالحهم التي غالباً ما كانت تتعارض ومصالح الدولة. الكتاب رحلة شيّقة وثريّة في عالم الحكّام والمحكومين.
