يقول ابن الأثير: "إن البدعة بدعتان: بدعة هدى، وبدعة ضلال فما كان في خلاف ما أمر الله به ورسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فهو في حيز الذم والإنكار. وما كان واقعاً تحت عموم ما ندب الله إليه، وحضّ عليه الله ورسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم فهو في حيّز المدح". في هذا الإطار جاء هذا الكتاب متحدثاً عن معنى البدعة، ذاكراً أنواعها، مبيناً حسنها وسيئها حسبما اقتضته الأدلة، في إطار القواعد الأصولية.
هذا وقد ألحق الكتاب برسالة بيانية يتحدث فيها عن مسألة ترك النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أو السلف الصالح لفعل من غير أن يأتي فيه حديث أو أثر بالنهي عن ذلك الشيء وهدفه توضيح مسألة الترك وإبطال قول من يحتج به بما أبداه من الدلائل التي لم تدع قولاً لمنصف ولا تركت هرباً لصاحب جدل ولحاج.
