في هذا الكتاب دراسة تأصيلية تطبيقية لمفهوم البدعة في الشريعة الإسلامية، بيَّن فيه مؤلفه مفهومَ البدعة في اللغة والشرع، وانقسامَ البدعة إلى مراتب، شارحاً معنى البدعة الوارد في السنة المطهَّرة بفهم سلَف الأمّة من كبار الأئمة الفقهاء على اختلاف أدوار الفقه الإسلاميّ.
وقد تناولَ المؤلف قضايا مهمةً تتعلّق بتوضيح مفهوم البدعة، منها: حكم الترك وأنواعه ـ هَدْي النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فيما أحدثه الصحابة رضيَ الله عنهم ـ هَدْي الصحابة رضي الله عنهم في المحدَثات بعد وفاة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ التوقيف في العبادات والقياس عليها. ثم ذكر المؤلف 36 ستاً وثلاثين مسألةً مما اختلف السلفُ في الحكم عليها بالبدعة أو الجواز، ليخلص بعد عرضٍ تفصيلي لتلك المسائل أنّ الاختلاف بين السلف لم يَخرج عن دائرة الاختلاف في الاجتهاد، كما لم يخرج بالمختلفِينَ منهم عن سمت التآخي والتراحُم والتماس العذر، دونَ أن يكون في ذلك تهوينٌ من خطورة الابتداع في الدين، لوضوح مفهوم البدعة عندهم وما يتّسم به من الانضباط والعمق وسلامة التقعيد والانسجام مع روح الشريعة ومقاصدها. ثم شرحَ المؤلفُ ما ذهبَ إليه بعضُ المعاصرين من تضييقٍ لمعنى البدعة عمّا كان عليه عندَ الأئمة السابقين، واضعاً 20 عشرين نموذجاً لمسائل اختلف فيها أولئك المضيقون بين قائل ببدعيتها وقائل بجوازها، اختلافاً يسيرون فيه على طريقة التضييق تارةً، وعلى منهج السابقينَ تارةً أخرى.
وقد سار المؤلف في كتابه هذا على منهج علميّ موضوعيّ، أساسُه التدليل والتوثيق والدقة، وقِوامُه المناقشة العلمية الهادئة والبحثُ النزيه. وخرجَ بنتائج يهم الباحثين الشرعيين الاطلاعُ عليها، لا سيّما العاملين في مجال الفقه الإسلاميّ والإفتاء.
