شكل الحجاب والحريم عبر القرون، رمزين فتنت بهما أوربا ونفرت منهما في آن معاً، فقد كوّنا عائقاً حال بين المراقب الغربي وبين رؤية النساء في الشرق والتواصل معهن مما ولولديه شعوراً بالإحباط وسلوكاً عدوانياً من جهة، ومن جهة أخرى كانا حلماً داعب خياله، ونوعاً من "الفنتازيا"، وأملاً بالمغامرة بحثاً عن الشهوة وعن الغريب والشاذ، بعد كل ما سمعه حول "الجمال من خلف الحجاب" و"درة نسائم الحرير" يختلف الأمر بالنسبة للأوربيات حين زرن الشرق، فقد كن على نفس القدر من الغموض والعدائية، وكما فعل الرجال، نظرن إلى الأمور بمنظار أوربي عرفي متعصب وأن اختلفت الأسباب كما سيرى القارئ خلال قراءته لفصول هذا الكتاب الذي ضم مختارات كانت مثار اهتمام المؤلف وبشكل خاص ذلك الكم الهائل من كتب الرحلات التي وضعها كتّاب رحلات ولفظتها المطابع الأوربية خلال القرن التاسع عشر وبدايات القرن العشرين.
