إذا نظرنا إلى تأريخ المسجد الحرام عبر العصور، نجد أنه مرّ عليه أئمة أحيوا محرابه بحسن التلاوة، وجميل القراءة، وخطباء وجهوا منبره لنصح الأمة، وكلمة الحق، وإرشاد الخلق، فكان لكلامهم وقع، ولقراءاتهم نفع، بقدر ما أوتوا من إخلاص وتقوى، ومخافة من الله في السر والنجوى.
فكان الإمام الأول، والخطيب المقدم، هو سيد الخلق أجمعين، نبينا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، الذي أم الناس في المسجد الحرام مراراً في عام الفتح وفي حجة الوداع، وذلك بعدما أمه جبريل عليه السلام عند الكعبة في أول وقت الصلاة وآخره.
ثم توالى على الحرم المكي أئمة وخطباء منذ عصر النبوة إلى وقتنا الحاضر: فكان أولهم عتاب بن أسيد رضي الله عنه، ولاه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إمارة مكة، فكانت الإمامة والخطابة تبعاً لإمارته. ثم تغير الحال فيما بعد، فأصبحت الإمارة والإمامة منفصلتين تماماً، كما هو الحال في وقتنا الحاضر.
ومن خلال النظر في كتب التواريخ المكية نجد أن أخبار الأئمة والخطباء مبثوثة في ثناياها، ومتفرقة بين دفتيها لم تفرد بكتاب مستقل، ولا ببحث متخصص، ولم يجمعهم ديوان، ولم يستقصهم إنسان, لذا رأى أن يجمعهم في كتاب واحد، ليتمكن القارئ من معرفتهم، ويحيط علماً بأخبارهم.
فكان هذا الكتاب "وسام الكرم في تراجم أئمة وخطباء الحرم" وهو يضم إلى جانب في قسمه الأول دراسة تناولت تاريخ الإمام والخطابة في المسجد الحرام حيث تحدث عن نظام الإمامة والخطابة في المسجد الحرام وأنواعه، وتاريخ المقامات الأربعة في المسجد الحرام (نشأتها ووصفها وكيفية الصلاة بها وموقف العلماء من تعدد الجماعات فيها، وبحث أيضاً في ظواهر وظيفة الإمامة والخطابة عبر العصور بالمسجد الحرام. أما القسم الثاني فجاء بمثابة معجم ألف بائي ذكر 548 ترجمة تناولت الحديث عن قائمة وخطباء المسجد الحرام من عهد الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وحتى يومنا هذا.
