في هذا الكتاب، يسجّل فيصل بن الحسين إعترافاتٍ من نوع خاصّ عن محطّة مهمّةٍ من مسيرته في العمل من أجل الإستقلال العربيّ، فهو، وإن خرج من دمشق بحسرةٍ كبيرة بعد معركة ميسلون، لم يكلّ عن العمل، ولم يكفّ عن المحاولة والمطالبة بالإستقلال العربيّ.
وهو هنا يوضّح مقاصده وموقفه من الحليف الفرنسيّ الّذي غدر بالعرب وبآمالهم، ويبدأ رحلة جديدةً في لحظةٍ تاريخيّة كانت تمرّ أيّامها عليه عصبيةً وثقيلةً في رحلة إغتراب أشبه بالمنفى، وهو يقارع الزمان ودهاة الساسة من الغرب كي يظفر ببقايا الحلم العربيّ.
تظهر حسرة فيصل وندمه، في هذه المذكّرات، بوضوح حين يقول: "... لقد وثقت بكلمة الجنرال غورو، واعتمدت على وعده بأن لا يسمح للجيوش الفرنسيّة بالتقدّم، فأخليت المراكز من الجند، وسرّحت قسماً كبيراً من الجيش، وأجبت - أنا الرجل الأعزل - بأنّني أرفض الحرب، وقد كنت أعرف أنّ موافقتي على الشروط الجديدة، لا بدّ أن تثير حرباً أهليّة في دمشق، وأعطيت الجنرال غورو عهداً صريحاً بان أنفّذ شروط 14 تّموز بالحرف، طالباً إليه، لقاءَ ذلك، إيقاف تقدّم الجيوش الفرنسيّة نحو دمشق...".
