لقد كتبتُ هذه الرواية لأصرخ للعالم أننا موجودون، في حياتنا البسيطة وحياتنا الروتينية، وضجرنا، وأننا نعمنا بالسعادة ولم نكن نسعى وراء أكثر من البقاء فيها قبل أن يدفع بنا إلى جهات الأرض، ونصبح عصابة من المنفيين واللاجئين، والمهاجرين.
بإحساس نادر مفعم بالرومانسية، يستحضر غاييل فاي عذابات طفل حاصره تاريخ جعله ينمو بشكل أسرع مما كان متوقعاً، يقص علينا المؤلف دراما عرفها جيداً، في روايته الأولى هذه ذات الواقع الإستثنائي، والتي تخللتها ظلال وأضواء، وأحداث مأسوية وفكاهة، وشخصيات تحاول تجاوز المأساة والبقاء على قيد الحياة.
