تفرق الصحب بعد أن قطعوا الساحة الرملة الواسعة التي تفصل الواحة عن الدرب المؤدي إلى المرعى، حمودة يكرز أغنامه أمامي، ساهماً على غير عادته، يلتصق بالحائط اتقاء لحرارة الشمس. الحوائط التي ارتمي ظلها تحت قدميه تصنع خطاً ضيقاً، تماماً مثل صدره الذي انحشر اليوم خزياً، كان يدهس كل ما يقابله من "بعر" الحمير المتيبس، أو يركله بقدمه فيتناثر أمامه في قطع صغيرة. ويبدو أنه ارتاح لهذا الفعل فاستمر في الركل حتى أصبح على مقربة من الحظائر. هذ الشارع الذي يعج بالصمت والحرارة هو اختصاراً للحياة، هكذا، خط رفيع من الظلال التي تجود بها الحوائط، يوازيه تماماً خط رفيع أيضاً من روث البهائم، خطوط متوازية لا تلتقي أبداً، ولكنها تنتهي جميعاً عند نقطة واحدة.
