أصله من ساوه، ومن أولاد التجار.
توفي بنيسابور في جمادى الآخرة، وقد شاخ.
من تصانيفه: «البسيط» في نحو 16 مجلدا في التفسير، «المغازي»، «شرح ديوان المتنبي»، «الإغراب في الإعراب»، و«نفي التحريف عن القرآن الشريف».

يضم الكتاب بجزئيه شرح الواحدي لديوان أبي الطيب المتنبي، وقد تناول في فاتحته الاتجاهات المشهورة التي تكونت حول الشاعر في سيرته وصفته وشاعريته والأهم في تناول الواحدي وهو يعرض مواقف النقاد المذكورة، ورفضه للمتطرف منها وحرصه على مقولة الصدق، وهو ينظر في شعر المتنبي ويضعه في ميزان النقد ليخلص إلى تحديد قيمة هذه الشاعرية المحدثة في عصره. وقد جمع المحقق ما دونه المترجمون الذين استقصوا أخباره وتبعوا سيرته ودوّنوا ما دار حوله من الأخبار والطرائف والنوادر، ضمن خمسة فصول: مولده ونسبه ونشأته، في مقتله، وفي صفاته وشاعريته، وفيما قيل حول لقبه (المتنبي)، وفي أخباره مع أمراء عصره.
