إن دراسة الخطوات الأولى في العمل الزخرفي تقوم على الاهتمام بالأسس التنظيمية المعروفة التي يقوم عليها كل تكوين زخرفي ناجح. حيث لابد من إدراك بعض القيم الجمالية الموجودة في الطبيعة وتأملها ورفع الذوق والتذوق بادراك ما في الطبيعة من سحر وجمال وضعه الله سبحانه وتعالى في النبات و الحيوان والجماد وكل ما في الكون. وتقوم الخطوات الأولى لدراسة الزخرفة على التبسيط وتحويل الأشكال الموجودة إلى أشكال مجردة هندسية, فما من شكل إلا ويتحول إلى دائرة أو مربع أو مثلث. فالطبيعة هي أساس علم الزخرفة بما فيها من مرئيات وهي المعين الذي يستمد منه الفنان خياله وهي مصدر إلهامه. وكلما كانت الزخرفة مستمدة من البيئة التي يعيش فيها الفنان كلما كانت صادقة معبرة عن روح المكان الذي يحياه وتكون الوحدات تقترب من الكمال ملائمة لروح العصر الذي يعيش فيه. وتعتبر الزخرفة من أهم الفنون التشكيلية وأعظمها أثراً في تجميل وكساب معظم المنتجات الحرفية وغيرها من مختلف الصناعات وإعطائها قيمة جمالية جذابة إلى جانب أهدافها النفعية. في هذا اللإطار يأتي الكتاب الذي بين يدينا حيث يبحث بالإضافة الى قواعد الزخرفة, نشأة الزخرفة النقطة, الدائرة, الخط ويعرض لمجموعة كبيرة من نماذج الزخرفة.
