في ظل المعاملة القاسية التي عاناها المصريون من قبل البريطانيين والأحكام العرفية التي أصدرت بحق المصريين، ورغبة المصريين بالحصول على الاستقلال، قامت ثورة 1919م والتي تعتبر أول ثورة شعبية في أفريقيا وفي الشرق الأوسط، تبعتها الهند وثورة العراق والمغرب وليبيا.
أما عن لماذا قامت الثورة؟ فقد لاقت الجماهير الفقيرة ظلم واستغلال خلال أربع سنوات هي عمر الحرب العالمية الأولى، ففي الريف كانت تصادر ممتلكات الفلاحين من ماشية ومحصول لأجل المساهمة في تكاليف الحرب، كما حرصت السلطات العسكرية على إجبار الفلاحين على زراعة المحاصيل التي تتناسب مع متطلبات الحرب، وبيعها بأسعار قليلة، وتم تجنيد مئات الآلاف من الفلاحين بشكل قسري للمشاركة في الحرب فيما سمي بـ"فرقة العمل المصرية" التي استخدمت في الأعمال المعاونة وراء خطوط القتال في سيناء وفلسطين والعراق وفرنسا وبلجيكا وغيرها، نقصت السلع الأساسية بشكل حاد، وتدهورت الأوضاع المعيشية لكل من سكان الريف والمدن، وشهدت مدينتي القاهرة والاسكندرية مظاهرات للعاطلين ومواكب للجائعين تطورت أحيانًا إلى ممارسات عنيفة تمثلت في النهب والتخريب. ولم تفلح إجراءات الحكومة لمواجهة الغلاء، مثل توزيع كميات من الخبز على سكان المدن أو محاولة ترحيل العمال العاطلين إلى قراهم، في التخفيف من حدة الأزمة، كذلك تعرض العمال ونقاباتهم لهجوم بسبب إعلان الأحكام العرفية.
