لا يقهر الموت إلا الحجر والكلمة، والكلمة أطول عمرًا من الحجر وأصلب على الزمن، وأقدر على مغالبته، فالأهرام وكتاب الموتى ولدا في يوم واحد من أيام التاريخ، التي هي كألف يوم مما يعدون أو تزيد، وما زالا يتنفسان أنفاس الحياة حتى غدنا وبعد غدنا. وقد يأكل الزمن المتطاول من الأهرام حجرًا فحجرًا، ولكنه لن يسقط من كتاب الموتى كلمة واحدة.
هذا الذي قاله صلاح عبد الصبور في كتابه الجميل حتى نقهر الموت، ينطبق تمامًا عليه منذ غيابه الجسدي عن عالمنا يوم 13 أغسطس سنة 1981 كما ينطبق- بطبيعة الحال- على الذين يتحدث عنهم هذا الكتاب، فهم قد عاشوا وما زالوا يعيشون بعد الموت، لأن ما أبدعه كثيرون منهم خلال حياتهم يتكفل بمهمة مغالبة الزمن.
يتحدث الكتاب عن أربعين كاتبًا وشاعرًا ممن عبروا ضفاف الحياة إلى الديار التي لم يعد من الذاهبين إليها أحد، وبطبيعة الحال فإن الأدباء والشعراء الذين يتحدث عنهم الكتاب ينتمون لأقطار عربية عديدة ولأجيال مختلفة، ومن هؤلاء عميد الأدب العربي طه حسين وعباس العقاد وميخائيل نعيمة وإميل حبيبي وغسان كنفاني وثروت عكاشة وسهير القلماوي وصلاح عبد الصبور والسياب وبلند الحيدري ونازك الملائكة، وقد كتب الشاعر حسن توفيق عنهم من واقع صداقاته الروحية أو المباشرة مع كثيرين منهم، ويسعدنا أن نقدم عاشوا بعد الموت للقراء العرب، وخصوصًا ممن ينتمون للجيل العربي الجديد.
