"عرق الصبا هي أسطورة شعبية عن مجتمع الريّ.. الشق الخصب من خريطة مصر، في لحظة الالتقاء بالصحراء وسكانها، من قبائل عربية استوطنت مصر وشكّلت جزءاً لا يتجزأ منها منذ عهود قديمة. تقول الأسطورة التي تسوقها لرواية - دون أن ثيعرف القارئ إن كانت لها جذور شعبية أم من نسج المؤلف - إن بركات المغربي، مؤسس نزلة بركات شمالي شسوهاج، جاءته رؤية في المنام "من فرعون مصر، بتاع البر المصري كله" فحضر من "فاس ومكناس" إلى نقطة بعينها على الخط الفاصل بين الوادي والصحراء. ولمّا حضر بركات أنعم عليه النيل بعرق الصبا، فأعطاه قوة خارقة لما شرب منه في ساعة نوم النهر، فأصبح "يقدر يوقِّف القطر بدراعه ويشيل أردب الغلة بصابعين".
وكأنها لحظة توحّد الوادي بالصحراء؛ إذ نادت مصر القديمة على عرب الهجرة الثانية فجاءوا وسكنوا هوامش النيل وملّكهم النيل سرّه فمنحهم عرق الصبا.
وتمضي الرواية في مساراتها المُعقدة، بعد افتتاحيتها الرمزية الطموحة، لتقدم صورة حية من لحم ودمّ لما ساقه المؤرخون عن لحظة ميلاد مصر الحديثة في القرنين الثامن عشر والتاس عشر، مروراً بالقرن العشرين وحتى 2011، في ظلّ تمكّن حاد من أدوات السرد الشفاهي وفهم دقيق لتحولات المكان المحلي، ووعي بالغ بنقاط التحوّل التاريخية وآثارها على الواقع الاجتماعي".
