تم إعداد هذا الكتاب، ليكون عوناً للطلاب في الاقبال على كتاب مهارة علم العروض والقافية، بعيدا عن ازدحام المصطلحات، وفي صورة مبسطة وأكثر دقة وجاذبية، في الوقت نفسه، يعزز الجانب النظري بالجانب التطبيقي من حيث الإكثار من أسئلة التقويم الذاتي، والإكثار من التدريبات المتنوعة التي تثري تجربة الطلاب، وتنمي مهارتهم، بالإضافة الى الإكثار من الشواهد المتخيرة من قديم الشعر وحديثه.
أما الأهداف التي توخيناها من تدريس هذه المادة فهي:
1-تتبع نشأة علم العروض وبيان أهميته وفائدته، والوقوف على أبعاده.
2-إدراك موسيقا الشعر ممثلة في أوزانه وقوافيه، وتأكيد دور هذه الموسيقا بوصفها أهم عنصر يرتكز عليه الشعر ويقوم به.
3-تحليل العلاقة بين النظامين اللغوي والعروضي في الشعر.
4-إكساب الطلبة مهارة التقطيع العروضي وتحديد التفاعيل ووصف أحوالها وجوازاتها في كل وزن من الأوزان العروضية، وبذلك يتمكنون من معرفة صحيح الشعر من فاسده، ويصبح هذا العلم ضرورة حتمية لدرس الأدب.
5-تأكيد ضرورة أن ينطلق درس العروض من نماذج شعرية مشرقة جذابة مؤثرة، تُحوّل هذا الدرس من رموز وأصوات إلى درس وظيفي ينبه مشاعر الطلبة ويثير تفكيرهم.
6-تحديد أنواع القوافي وحروفها وحركاتها وعيوبها.
