يعتني هذا الكتاب في جانب مهم من جوانب النثر الأندلسي هو الرسائل، وهي الرسائل التي تمتاز بطابعها القصصي، ويطمح كما أراد له مؤلفه الدكتور خليل محمد إبراهيم إلى أن يجيب بتجرد ممكن عما إذا كان في أدب الرسائل الأندلسية ملامح قصصية، وإذا وجدت مثل هذه الملامح، فهل ترتقي إلى أن تصبح قصصاً أو حكايات؟
وبغرض دراسة الملامح القصصية في الرسائل الأندلسية من (القرن الخامس إلى القرن الثامن) وزع المؤلف دراسته إلى مقدمة، ومفهومات تمهيدية وبابين وخاتمة، وخلاصة باللغة الإنكليزية مع قائمة المصادر والمراجع. فأما المفهومات التمهيدية، فقد تعرض فيها المؤلف لتحديد مفهومات الكلمات: 1- رسالة، 2- قصة، 3- ملامح. وهي كلمات لها مفهومات متطورة من القديم إلى الحديث، لذلك حاول المؤلف أن يجعلها مفاتيح اساسية لما بعدها. أما البابان، فقد تضمن كلٌ منهما فصلين، فأما الباب الأول، فعنوانه (ملامح قصصية طويلة). عنوان أول الفصلين (رسالة التوابع والزواج جنسها الأدبي مزايا وعيوب)، وعنوان ثانيهما (حي بن يقظان جنسها الأدبي مزايا وعيوب) تتبّع المؤلف في هذين الفصلين ما يثبت كونهما رسالتين، ثم ما إذا كان كل من الرسالتين متضمناً ملامح قصصية، رجع فيهما إلى ما قاله العلماء السابقون والمعاصرون في دراسة هذين النصين المهمين، عارضاً آراءهم على بعضها وعلى الرسالتين، محلللاً ومعللاً ومستنتجاً نتائج يمكن القول أنه لم يسبقه إليها أحد.
أما الباب الثاني فعنوانه (ملامح قصصية قصيرة)، تضمن فصلين كذلك أولهما تحت عنوان (طوق الحمامة في الألفة والآلاف أخبار قصصية)، وثانيهما تحت عنوان (لسان الدين إبن الخطيب المترسل قاصاً)، وفيها يعرض المؤلف ما نثر إبن حزيم في طوق الحمامة من الأخبار القصصية مع التحليل والتعليل والشرح ثم الإستنتاج. ثم كان الفصل الأخير المتعلق بـ (لسان الدين بن الخطيب) المترسل القاص الذي قل من عرف أن له قصصاً في رسائله. وقد حاول المؤلف هنا قراءة جملة صالحة من رسائله، فوجدها تتشابه في جوانب، وتختلف في أخرى، وأن الغالب على رسائله القصصية طغيان المحسنات البديعية، والصور البيانية، ولكن بعضها يميل إلى القص الجاد، والآخر يميل إلى القص المداعب، فدرس كلا النوعين، وكشف ما فيهما من جمال القص في هذا النوع من النثر الأندلسي الخالد على مر القرون.
