ويقصد بالمنهجية: الإطار العلمي الذي نستخدم فيه العقل، بطاقته العظمى، لاكتشاف الحقائق التاريخية والاجتماعية في حياة الإمام رضي الله عنه، فقد كان أمير المؤمنين مصدراً للمعرفة الحقة والعلم الديني بعد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وكان عصره غنياً بالحقائق الشرعية والوقائع الاجتماعية التي بقيت، وستبقى مناراً للأجيال المتعاقبة.
وبالعودة لأقسام هذا البحث نجده قد توزع على خمسة أبواب، هي: مرحلة بناء الذات، الجهاد السلمي، الجهاد المسلح، الولاية ومشاكل السياسة، والخلافة والدولة، على مساحة ثلاثين فصلاً، حيث تناول السيرة الذاتية للإمام أمير المؤمنين من الولادة وحتى الخلافة، بشيء من العمق والتحليل.
