كان كتاب ستيفن هوكنج "موجز تاريخ الزمن A Brief history of time الذي حقق أفضل المبيعات، علامة مميزة في الكتابة العلمية. ويرجع السبب في ذلك إلى صوت المؤلف الواعد والموضوعات الملحة التي تناولها: طبيعة المكان والزمان، ودور الرب في الخلق، وتاريخ ومستقبل العالم. ومنذ أن نشر الكتاب دأب القراء مراراً على مخاطبة الأستاذ هوكنج وإخباره بالصعوبة التي يلقونها في فهم الموضوعات الأكثر أهمية في الكتاب.
