كانت فكرة هذا الكتاب فى ذهن المؤلف منذ أمد طويل, إلى أن تبلورت الفكرة فى رغبة ملحة لسد فراغ شاغر فى المكتبة الجغرافية والكرتوجرافية, يشعر به الدارسون والباحثون من الجغرافيين لهذا النوع من الدراسة.
وقد عالج المؤلف فى هذا الكتاب ثلاثة موضوعات هامة بالنسبة للجغرافى الموضوع الأول, ويتناوله الفصل الأول ويهتم بمقياس الرسم, ولا يفوتنا ماله من ضرورة فى كل العمليات الحسابية. كما يتناول بالدراسة الورنيات, فما من جهاز مساحى إلا وبه ورنية أو ميكرومتر لزيادة الدقة فى القياس.
والموضوع الثانى, يختص بطرق الرفع المساحية التى تعتمد على أجهزة وأدوات بسيطة, يستطيع الجغرافى إستيعابها وإستخدامها بسرعة, ولا تحتاج إلى أسس رياضية وهندسية متقدمة. ويلمس القارئ ذلك فى الفصول الثلاثة التالية والتى تتناول دراسة طرق الرفع المساحى البسيطة مثل إستخدام الجنزير أو البوصلة أو اللوحة المستوية. وكان الفصل الخامس عن الميزانية, التى يعتبر إجراؤها من العمليات التى يهتم بها الجغرافى, فمن طريقها تحدد مناسيب النقط المختلفة على سطح الأرض وتشكيل القطاعات.
أما الموضوع الثالث, والذى تناول الفصلان السادس والسابع, فيهتم بالمساحة التصويرية وإستخدام الصور الجوية, لما لها من أهمية فى الوقت الحاضر. فالبرغم من أنه لم يمض وقت طويل منذ بدء استعمال الصور الجوية فى رسم الخرائط, إلا أن الإنجازات التى تمت فى الآونة الأخيرة, جعلت منها أساسا لاغنى عنه فى الدراسات الجغرافية وتفسير الظاهرات الجغرافية والبشرية. وقد زود الفصل الأخير بعدد من اللوحت لأزواج من الصور الجوية, تمثل مظاهر جغرافية مختلفة, يمكن للقارئ فحصها وتفسيرها إستريوسكوبيا.
