يمتلك موضوع علاقة الرجل بالمرأة والمرأة بالرجل حساسيات معقدة ومركبة، ولأنه موضوع صراع قديم داخل المجتمعات البشرية، فقد استعملت آلياته في الصراع كثيراً من أصناف الأسلحة والأقنعة؛ التي تم ويتم فيها توظيف مختلف صور الذكاء الإنساني، (ذكاء الرجال وذكاء النساء)، بهدف تكريس مواقف ومواقع محددة في التراتب الجنسي والإجتماعي، كما تمت وما تزال تتم فيها كثير من صور التواطؤ والتناور وتبادل المواقع الرمزية رغم سيادة مواقع بعينها، حيث تتيح المناورات المستعملة في الحروب غير المعلنة بين الطرفين كثيراً من وسائل التموية والمراوغة ولأن إستئثار الرجال بالهيمنة عَمَّر طويلاً في التاريخ، بل وصنع كثيراً من الملامح الراسخة في هذا التاريخ.
فقد نتج عن ذلك كثير من صور الحيف والإقصاء، وكثير من مظاهر العنف الرمزي الظاهر والمبطن ولم يتمكن البشر من الإدراك الموضوعي والتاريخي لبنية ونظام علاقاتهم الإجتماعية، إلا في القرنين الماضيين، حيث لاحت العلاقات الأولى المبشرة بإمكانية تركيب نظام إجتماعي يقر بتكافؤ العلاقات الإجتماعية بين الجنسين، ويرسم الملامح الكبرى لمشروع في التحرر يقلص من هيمنة الذكور على الإناث.
