تتمتع دمشق المعروفة بأنها أقدم مدينة مأهولة في العالم بتاريخ عظيم ونفوذ سياسي وتجاري وكبيرين وإنجازات ثقافية وفنية رائعة، كما تتباهى دمشق بما فيها من أجمل فنون العمارة الإسلامية، كالجامع الأموي، بتراث عريق وقصور وبيوت خيالية في جمالها. ولكن للأسف أن عدداً من هذه المباني الأثرية بات بحاجة ماسة إلى الترميم.
وقد انطلق كل من (بريجيت كنان) و(تيم بيدو) لتسجيل وحفظ هذه النفائس المعمارية التي لا تقدر بثمن وعرضها على العالم بأسره، وقد حصل كلاهما على مدخل لا سابق له إلى الجزء المخبأ من المدينة ونتج عن بحثهما كتاب قيم وذو أهمية عظيمة لكل المهتمين بالتراث المعماري في العالم الإسلامي.
يقدم نص هذا الكتاب أول الأمر الخلفية التاريخية فيصف تطور مدينة دمشق وأيامها الطيبة عبر العصور، ثم ينتقل بعدها ليقدم وصفاً لفن العمارة في تلك المدينة وأسلوب الحياة فيها، ثم يختتم صفحاته بتقديم وصف للبيوت الدمشقية والناس الذين شيدوها وعاشوا فيها.
أما الصور الرائعة التي يضمها الكتاب بين صفحاته فتبين واجهات بعض البيوت وباحاتها وبحراتها الفوارة وأعمال التزيين والزخرفة الداخلية المذهلة التي تختبئ وراء السور المتواضع للمدينة القديمة بتفاصيلها الزخرفية الرائعة المنفذة على الخشب والحجر والرخام والجص والزجاج والصدف.
كما كان رفيق رضا سعيد سنداً كبيراً وراء نشر محتويات هذا الكتاب الذي يشكل بمجمله نداء حثيثاً وحزيناً للحفاظ على قلب وجوهر هذه العاصمة التاريخية العريقة.
