هذا الكتاب يعرض مبادئ تصميم الخرائط غير الخرائط المساحية التفصيلية-التى يقوم بإنشائها الخرائطيين المساحين بطرق الرفع والقياس والتوقيع المباشر من الحقل (الطبيعة) وهى ذات مقياس كبير- سواء كانت هذه الخرائط عامة أو خاصة أو كان مقياس رسمها متوسط أو صغير. وتصميم الخرائط موضوع متعدد الجوانب ولا يمكن عرضه فى كتاب واحد. فعالمنا سريع التغير وحل مشكلاته البيئية التى تواكب صور نموه المركبة والمعقدة, ويتطلب التعامل مع كم هائل من البيانات والمعلومات المكانية والوصفية.
وعلى الرغم من ذلك فمبادئ وقواعد تصميم وتنفيذ الخرائط مازالت هى هى لم تتغير. والكتاب الذى بين أيدينا يعرض تلك المبادئ والقواعد, وهو يقع فى ثمانية فصول متتابعة بصورة منطقية مترابطة. يعرض الفصل الأول عمليات تجميع وتوليف المادة الخرائطية من مصادرها المختلفة.
ويعرض الفصل الثانى مفاهيم وضوابط وعمليات التعميم الخراطى. ويعالج الفصل الثالث تصميم الخرائط والرسم الخرائطى الذى يعد عنصرا حيويا فى عملية التصميم. ويعرض الفصل الرابع الكتابة على الخرائط والأسماء ومسميات الأماكن والظاهرات الجغرافية ورسم الحروف الهجائية وأماكن الكتابة على الخرائط.
ويناقش الفصل الخامس الاتصال الخرائطى وعناصره وحركة عين مستخدم الخريطة وأساليب علم النفس الفيزيائى وعلاقتها بالاتصال الخرائطى. ويعرض الفصل السادس التصوير الخرائطى الضوئى والمونتاج وهو المرحلة الأولى فى إنتاج الخرائط تلك المرحلة التى تنتهى بالحصول على الخريطة الأولية النهائية التى يتم تجهيز ألواح الطباعة عن طريقها.
وفى الفصل السابع يت عرض موضوع طباعة الخرائط وما يتعلق به من أحبار الطباعة وورق الطباعة وماكينات الطباعة ثم مراحل طباعة الخرائط حتى تصل إلى يد مستخدم الخريطة. وجاء الفصل الثامن ليتناول التعريف بنظم المعلومات الجغرافية وأسس تصميم نظام المعلومات الجغرافى وأهم الاعتبارات المنطقية التى يضعها مصمم النظام فى الاعتبار أثناء عملية التصميم, وكيفية رفع فاعلية الأداء.
