تُمثّل مرحلة الطفولة أهميّة بالغة في عملية تكوين الجيل الجديد، في أيّ مجتمع من المُجتمعات؛ ففي هذه المرحلة العمرية، تنمو قُدرات الطفل وتتفتّح مواهبه، ويكون قابلاً للتأثر والتوجّيه والتشكيل، وقد أثبتت الدراسات والأبحاث النفسية والتربويّة مثل دراسة نادر القنة (2013) "ثقافة الطفل والرهان على المستقبل"، ودراسة حسين كمال بهاء الدين (2011) "الإستثمار في الطفولة والإهتمام برعايتها ودمج الطفل ذي الإعاقة" خطورة هذه المرحلة وأهميّتها في بناء الإنسان وتكوين شخصيته، وتحديد إتجاهاته المستقبليّة، وتشكيل وعيه الثقافي والمعرفي والقيمي والسلوكي، فما يتكون في هذه الفترة من عادات وإتجاهات ومُعتقدات وقيم، يصعب تعديلها فيما بعد؛ إذ إن السمات الرئيسة لشخصية الفرد، تعود في أصولها إلى هذه المرحلة المُهمّة من حياته.
وحتى يكون أفراد الجيل الجديد قادرين على القيام بواجباتهم ومسؤولياتهم تجاه وطنهم وأمتهم، لا بدّ من الإهتمام بجميع الجوانب التربوية والنفسية والمعرفية للطفل.
ويبدأ هذا الإهتمام من داخل الأسرة، ثم تتفرّع المسؤوليات لتشمل المُجتمع بأسره، بما فيه وسائل الإعلام، التي تؤدي دوراً مُهمّاً وخطيراً في تكوين ثقافة الطفل وتشكيل وعيه وإدراكه، فضلاً عن دورها الكبير في رفع مستوى الوعي وتعبئة وجهة النظر العامة، في التعرّف على إحتياجات الأطفال والإيمان بها، وبناء جسور تواصل بين عوالم الطفل وبين الثقافة السائدة من حوله.
وبالرغم من إشتراك وسائل الإعلام المُختلفة مع البيت والمدرسة ومؤسسات الثقافة في المُجتمع في مهام تنشئة الطفل، إلا أنها لا تنتهج الطرق والوسائل والأساليب نفسها، بل أنها تُعدّ ذات تأثيرٍ أكبر من كافة مؤسسات المُجتمع التربويّة الأخرى، لما تمتلكه من آليّات متنوّعة ومُتجددّة للتأثير.
