إن فن التربية لن يصل إلى حالة الوضوح التام بدون مساعدة الفلسفة فهناك علاقة متبادلة بين الاثنين وأحدهما بدون الآخر ناقص، ولا يمكن الانتفاع به، هذا وإذ لم تبن التربية ودقائقها على أسس نفسية وفلسفيى لكانت موضوعاً مملاً حتى على القائمين بالتربية أنفسهم ولكانت فروع التربية كالتنظيم الداخلي للمدارس والمنهاج مثلاً، أكثر ملالة وسآمة، ولما خرجت التربية عن أن تكون موضوعاً ميكانيكياً صرفاً، لا يتجاوز معلومات جافة كجدول الضرب تستظهر قبل الامتحان، ولكانت أقرب ما تكون إلى مجموعة من المعلومات المبعثرة المهوشة لا رباط فيها ولا حياة.
وليس هذا الكتاب تاريخاً لتطور طرق التربية لكنه يسرد نواحي التربية القديمة في مدارسها الماضية، فيستعرض أسلوبها وينقد نظرتها إلى الطفل. تلك النظرة التي لم تعد تراعي من حاجاته إلا حيزاً من الفراغ حجمه مائة متر مكعب ومساحته عشرون متراً مربعاً، ثم يعود لينظر مقارناً بها مدرستنا الحديثة بأسسها القويمة، وأسلوبها الجديد، فيذكر المدرس والطالب بجمود التربية المنصرمة، وينبههما إلى حكم الأجيال القادمة علينا، ذلك الحكم الذي يشبه حكمنا على السالفين.
فإلى طلاب البحث في علم التربية المبني على أسس فلسفية ونفسية، ومن يهمهم أمر التربية عموماً يتوجه هذا الكتاب الذي يقدّم لهم ملخصاً جامعاً للكثير من نظريات التربية وتطبيقاتها العملية.
