لقد سجل البيهقي في كتابة وقائع حكم الغزنويين منذ سنة 409-451 هـ/1024-1066 م فشملت مجلداته وقائع 42 سنة بحيث غطت المجلدات الأربع الأولي تاريخ ناصري وتاريخ يميني أما المجلد الخامس والسادس والسابع والثامن والتاسع والعاشر فتشمل علي القسم الموجود وهو تاريخ المسعودي والمسمي ب" تاريخ البيهقي" أما المجلدات العشرون الأخيرة من الحادي عشر وحتي الثلاثين فقد فقدت جميعها والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يتحدث عن الأجزاء المفقودة من كتاب أبي الفضل البيهقي فقد جاء علي أربعة أقسام :ـ القسم الأول :ـ الأجزاء المفقودة من كتاب " تاريخ ناصري" الذي ألف في عهد حكم سبكتكين وكان يمثل القسم الأول من تاريخ آل سبكتكين. القسم الثاني :ـ الأجزاء المفقودة من تاريخ اليميني الذي كتب في عهد حكم محمود بن سبكتكين وكان يمثل القسم الثاني من الكتاب. القسم الثالث: الأجزاء المفقودة من الفصول الأخيرة التي وصلتنا بعد تاريخ المسعودي وكتبت في عهد الخلفاء مسعود بن محمود . القسم الرابع: الأجزاء المفقودة من كتاب مقامات أبي نصر مشكان.
