مزارع إنتاج الألبان في مصر- مرت بمراحل مختلفة من الارتفاع والهبوط الذي كان له تأثير مباشر على هذه الصناعة الحيوية- وكانت بداية النهضة الكبرى في الثمانينيات بإنشاء أول مزارع نموذجية للأبقار عالية الإدرار بقوة ألف بقرة..
وفي عام 1988 تخلصت الحكومة الأمريكية من فائض الثروة الحيوانية عندها للدول النامية كهبة مجانًا على أن تتحمل تكاليف الشحن فقط والتي وصلت لحوالي ألف جنيه للرأس.. مما أدى إلى زيادة كبيرة في مجال الاستثمار بإنشاء مزارع إنتاج الألبان حتى وصل عددها إلى حوالي 700 مزرعة لا يقل قوة الواحدة عن 50 رأس.. وذلك بخلاف المزارع الأهلية التي استخدمت السلالات المحسنة بين الأنواع المستوردة والأنواع المحلية، مما أدى إلى زيادة متوسط إنتاج الألبان من 8 -15 كيلو جرام يوميًا.
واستمر هذا التقدم في زيادة أعداد المزارع النموذجية وزيادة عدد الشركات المنتجة للألبان المعبأة في مصر حتى العام الماضي.. ومع تحرير سعر الصرف- حيث ارتفعت أسعار العلف بصورة خطيرة.. أدت إلى تصفية بعض المزارع النموذجية- وعجز بعض صغار المربين عن شراء ما يلزمهم من الأعلاف المركزة، بحيث أصبح تخلي كثير من المربين عن مواشيهم ظاهرة غير مرغوبة، ونظرًا لأن تكاليف التغذية في إنتاج الألبان تبلغ 70% من القيمة النقدية للإنتاج الحيواني.. فكان لابد من تقليل تكلفة تغذية الحيوان بدون أن يؤثر على إنتاجه من الأمور المهمة التي تولاها العديد من العلماء في مجال بحوث التغذية.. وكان من أهمها استخدام السيلاج في تغذية ماشية اللبن والجاموس الحلاب واستخدام المخلفات الزراعية بعد زيادة محتواها من المواد الغذائية بالإضافة للاهتمام بالحالة الصحية لحيوان اللبن تجنبًا لبعض الأمراض التي تؤثر اقتصاديًا على هذه المشروعات مثلها مثل التغذية ولذلك أفردت في هذا الكتاب إلى الجديد في طرق التغذية لتقليل التكاليف وفي الوقت نفسه المحافظة على مستوى الإنتاج وكيفية رعاية الحيوان صحيًا حتى نتجنب المشاكل الصحية المؤثرة على الإنتاج..
