لقد قدم العلماء السابقون خدمة واسعة في نشر العلوم الشرعيّة من خلال ما بذلوه من جهد كبير في التأليف والتدريس فانصبت جهودهم على شتى الجوانب، فكانت المكتبة الإسلامية حافلة بهذا الإرث العظيم؛ ومن هذه العلوم علم أصول الفقه الذي شكّل أهمية عظيمة في إستنباط الأحكام الشرعية، فكان التأصيل والتقعيد الطريق المؤدي إلى الإجتهاد.
هذا الفن في مرتبته العالية أصبح حاجة أساسية للمجتهد، فالضوابط الأصولية محددة وواضحة ودقيقة، وهي أسس في إستنباط الحكم التي لا يمكن تجاهلها أو الإستغناء عنها لذلك كانت محل عناية العلماء؛ اشتملت هذه المعلمة على جوانب مهمة من علم اللغة وأثرها، وقبول الأخبار، ومصادر الشريعة والترجيح والعقليات، فكانت بجدارة أصلاً في فن الإجتهاد.
ويعتبر كتاب "الإشارة في معرفة الأصول والوجازة" في معنى الدليل للإمام "أبي الوليد سليمان بن خلف الباجي" من الكتب الأصولية في المذهب المالكي المهمة تناول فيها الإمام "الباجي" أدلة الشرع من الكتاب والسنّة والإجماع إضافة إلى الجانب اللغوي من بيان الحقيقة والمجاز والعموم والشمول والإستثناء وكذلك ما يتعلق بالرواية من الأخبار والأسناد والناسخ والمنسوخ، وأيضاً أدلة الأحكام المختلف فيها وأخيراً الترجيح.
وقد عمل المحقق في الكتاب في إخراج الكتاب بحلّة جديدة، وتخريج الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، وشرح الكلمات المبهمة، وترجمة للأعلام، ووضع فهارس عامة.
