وقد جاء فى رواية لمحمد بن سحنون أن أباه ذهب إلى مصر عام 178هـ ليتلقى العلم على تلاميذ مالك أبن أنس، ولقى فى مصر ابن القاسم، وابن وهب، وأشهب، وكانوا من أبرز اتباع مالك، وكان قدومة إلى مصر فى السنة السابقة على موت مالك، كان سحنون قد حمل معه من القيروان تللك الأجزاء من موطأ مالك، التى كان أسد بن الفرات قد درسها على الإمام مالك، وكانت تطرح على بساط البحث، بعض المسائل التى تثيرها دراسة الموطأ فى حضرة ابن القاسم، فكان سحنون يستزيد من المعلومات فيسأل لم لا يرتحل ليسمع مالكًا نفسه فيجيب بأنه إنما يحول بينه وبين ذلك فقره وعوزه، وقد قال فيه ابن القاسم: ما قدم علينا أحد مثل سحنون، وأصبح سيد أهل المغرب فى فقه الأمام مالك، وذاع صيته، وسمعت شهرته الآفاق، وضرب إلية الناس من كل بقاع المغرب، ليدرسوا عليه مذهب مالك، وبورك له فى أصحابه عدة وإمامه، ومكث فى القضاء أربعين سنة، وكان له مجلس بالجامع الأعظم بالقيروان يأتيه الطلبه من أقطار الأرض، فلا غزو إذن أن ينشأ ابن سحنون نشأه مكينة فى هذا البيت الراسخ فى العلم والقضاء والإفتاء والشهرة، وهذه المدرسة العالية العريقة التى تعد جامعة الإمام مالك فى المغرب وأقطاره، وفى هذه الأجواء استسقى ابن سحنون لنفسة من علم والده وفقهه وتنظيره، حتى برع رغم حداثة سنة.
