فالإمام أبو بكر القفال أحد فحول المذهب الشافعي العتيق في القرن الخامس الهجري، حمل فقه مذهب الإمام محمد بن إدريس الشافعي- رضي الله عنه- إلى بلاد خراسان، وأسس طريقة مهذبة متينة في المذهب حملها عنه أصحابه؛ إذ كانت أمتن طريقة آنئذ وأكثرها تحقيقًا، فرحل إليه الفقهاء من البلاد وجلسوا عليه حتى تخرجوا به وبمدرسته في فقه مذهب الشافعية، وأصبح شيخ الشافعية في وقته ومكانه.
