لما كان لكتاب الإمام البخاري أهمية كبرى انبرى علماء المسلمين ممن حاذوا معه. وبعده وحتى إلى يومنا هذا بالاعتناء بهذا الكتاب شرحاً وتفصيلاً وتوثيقاً وتوضيحاً. ومؤلف هذا الكتاب من هؤلاء الذين كان شغلهم الشاعر كتاب صحيح البخاري فكان الباعث لتأليفه هذا الكتاب الكشف عما غمض من مسائل في كتاب هدي الساري وفتح الباري بشرح صحيح البخاري. وكانت له مقدمة وضح فيها ما حاول بيانه وهي:
أولها: الباعث على تصنيف البخاري للجامع الصحيح. ثانيها: بيان موضوع الكتاب والكشف عن مغزاه وبيان شروطه وكونه أصحّ الكتب المصنفة والحديث عن تراجمه وأبوابه البديعة المثال المنيعة المنال. ثالثها: بيان الحكمة من تقطيع الحديث واختصاره وإعادته وتكراره. رابعها: بيان السبب في إيراد الأحاديث المعلقة والآثار الموضوعة والموقوفة وبيان من وصلها. خامسها: ضبط الغريب. سادسها: ضبط الأسماء والكنى والأنساب المشكلة. سابعها: تعريف شيوخ البخاري الذين أهمل نسبهم. ثامنها: الجواب عن الأحاديث التي انتقدها عليه الحافظ الدارقطني. تاسعها: الجواب عن الرجال الذين طعن فيهم وروى البخاري عنهم. عاشرها: فهرسة الأبواب وعدة ما فيها من الأحاديث وأسماء الصحابة عنهم. عاشرها: فهرسة الأبواب وعدة ما فيها من الأحاديث وأسماء الصحابة الذين اشتمل عليهم كتابه وما لكل واحد من الأحاديث وذكر شمائل البخاري وفضله وآثاره.
