ينحصر الحديث في هذا الكتاب حول فشل الفيلسوف في المدينة، متخذاً الفيلسوف ابن طفيل نموذجاً، محاولاً تقديم اقتراحات أولية تفسر ذلك الفشل. متسائلاً عن ذلك المصير الذي حكم التاريخ فيه، قبل أن يفتح ملفه من جديد من طرف الأوائل، أوائلنا بالغرب للبحث في أسبابه وآثاره، وسرنا نحن خلفهم نحاول تقديم إجابات تخصنا، أي تخص أحكام الذات عن ذاتها، لا أحكام الغير عنها، دون التخلص تماماً من مفعول تقويم الغير على تقويمنا.
ولا زال سؤال المصير قائماً إلى يومنا هذا، وقد تعددت الإجابات، ورغم ذلك لم نحسم بعد في أمرنا، لأنه لا زالت المفارقة قائمة، وظل التساؤل عن كيف قدر لفكر حي أن يستمر حياً ليلد أحياء كثر يتجاوزون آباءهم الروحيين، في الضفة الأخرى قائماً، بينما في الهنا لم يكن الأمر كذلك، فما إن أعلن عن الولادة وارتفاع آلامها حتى بادر الناس بالسير في نقل الرفاة نحو أفق آخر قبل أن يتعرفوا عن المولود الجديد، وقبل أن يفسحوا له مقاماً بينهم ليحظى بنسمة الهواء مثله مثل باقي الموجودات الشرعية.
سيحاول هذا الكتاب أن يعرض لبعض الإجابات الوافدين من الغرب ابتداءاً من القرن 19، على أن يقوم بعد ذلك ببلورة أسئلة واقتراحات أثارها الخطاب الفلسفي العربي المعاصر.
