لعبت الصحافة في بداية النهضة الفكرية في البلدان الإسلامية دوراً مهمّاً في بثّ الوعي ونشر الثقافة، ولم تكن مدينة النجف الأشرف - السبّاقة في ميادين العلم والمعرفة - بمعزل عن هذا المولود الجديد، حيث ظهرت فيها عشرات الصحف والمجلات الثقافية والأدبية والإجتماعية والسياسية، وكانت سمتها الغالبة مواكبة الأحداث العالمية أدباً وسياسةً وثقافةً، فصحافة النجف الأشرف كانت مرآة صافية للنشاط الفكري والثقافي والإجتماعي الذي دار في مختلف أنديتها آنذاك.
وبين أيدينا عدد آخر من "سلسلة صحافة النجف الأشرف" وهو مجلة الغري لصاحبها ورئيس تحريرها شيخ العراقين عبد الرضا آل كاشف الغطاء، وهي مجلة أدبية إجتماعية عامة، عاشت ما يقارب ثلاثين عاماً، ومرّت بأدوار متفاوتة من النشاط والضعف سيما في السنين الأخيرة حيث كان يُكتفى بإصدار الملاحق بدل أعداد المجلة، ولذا تعذر ضبطها عدا سنواتها العشر الأولى، حيث توجد في مكتبات النجف، ولكن لم يتم العثور على جميع ما صدر في باقي السنوات سوى أعداد متفرقة غير مكتملة.
ولذا ضم الكتاب السنوات العشر الأولى، ثم الباقي بعد إكتمال الأعداد، صدر العدد الأول من السنة الأولى في يوم الثلاثاء 6 رجب 1358هــ الموافق 22/ 1939م وانتهت سنتها العاشرة بالعدد (21- 24) الخاص بمدينة البصرة في يوم الثلاثاء 25 ذو الحجة 1368هــ الموافق 18 تشرين الأول 1949م.
