تحتل الدراسات التأريخية التي تناولت حياة العرب قبل الإسلام أهمية كبيرة لدى الباحثين لأمرين، الأول: للوقوف على أصالة الماضي، إذ أنها تمثل القاعدة التي تقوم عليها دراسة تاريخ العرب بشكل عام والتاريخ الإسلامي بشكل خاص، والثاني: لدفع الغمامة والحيف عمّا لصق بها من رؤية البعض إليها، الذين يرون أن لا تاريخ للعرب قبل الإسلام، وأطلقوا على عصرها عصر ظلمات وفوضى، فالعربي عندهم لم يعرف حضارة ولم يتذوق ثقافة قبل الإسلام، وهو رأي وأهم فما حضارة العرب في الإسلام إلا ثمرة ماض طويل تخلله إرتفاع تدريجي ونمو حضاري في كل النواحي، الأدبية والسياسية والإجتماعية وحتى الإقتصادية التي احتوتها الكتب عندما تحدثت عن تلك الحقبة.
ويُعد كتاب شرح نهج البلاغة لابن أبي الحديد المعتزلى في مقدمة الكتب التي ضمّت بين طياتها الكثير من الروايات التي تناولت حياة العرب قبل الإسلام، وهو شرح لكتاب نهج البلاغة الذي يعد من الكتب التي حفظت للمكتبة العربية الإسلامية مكانتها العالية في مجال العلم والأدب والتراث، فقد حوى السفر الخالد كلام أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام) الذي كان يرتجل كلماته في مجالس أصحابه، وأثناء حروبهم، خطباً تجيش بها الذات فينطق بها اللسان فتأتى محكمة وهي تحتوي على أحداث وأمثال وقصص عن العرب قبل الإسلام استشهد بها، ولكون الجمهور المستمع لتلك الأحداث، كانوا يعرفون تفاصيلها، لقربهم منها، فلم يفصّلها لذا اقتضت الضرورة عند ابن أبي الحديد أن يوضح تلك الأحداث بشكل واسع وشامل ويوضحها عند شرحه لكلام الإمام (عليه السلام)، ثم غالباً ما يقوم بالإستطراد بالمادة التاريخية من كتب مختلفة لتعزيز كلامه، ليضع القارئ أمام معلومات كاملة عن الأحداث.
ومن خلال البحث، لم نجد دراسات تاريخية أكاديمية خصصت لدراسة كتاب شرح نهج البلاغة، إذ أن أغلب الدراسات السابقة كانت دراسات فلسفية ونحوية ولغوية متنوعة وحاولنا جاهدين أن نسجل للمكتبة العربية دراسة تضاف إلى دراسات الأخرى، وما هي إلا جانب واحد من جوانب عديدة جديرة بالدراسة والبحث لا زال تنتظر أقلام الباحثين المولعين بنهج البلاغة، راجين من الله القبول والتوفيق.
