عرف الاتجاه المعتزلي تطورات هائلة في القرنين الرابع والخامس الهجريين. وكتاب أبي سعيد النيسابوري نتاج تلك النقاشات الحامية التي كانت تدور بين رجال المدرستين المعتزلتين: البصرية والبغدادية في تلك الفترة: فمنذ تضاءلت أهمية المعتزلة السياسية بعد ضرب مراكز سلطانهم أيام المتوكل العباسي (- 248 هـ) تغيرت مراكز الثقل الأيديولوجية في مدارسهم ومجالسهم الفكرية. لقد تركوا اصولهم الخمسة جانباً وانشغوا بقضايا الفلك والفلسفة الطبيعية والمنطق والميتافيزيقا المعقلنة. ولا شك أن ذلك تم تحت تأثير الترجمات عن اليونانية، وكتابات فلاسفة الإسلام مثل الكندي والفارابي. لذلك فإن القارئ لكتاب النيسابوري لن يظفر الا بالقليل عن القضايا المتصلة بأصول المعتزلة الخمسة، وهنا تكمن أهمية الكتاب: فهو يمثل تعبيراً صحيحاً عن الموقف الفكري في قلب الاتجاه الاعتزالي إبان نهضة المعتزلة الثانية، وهي نهضة التفلسف والتنظير.
وإذا كان الكتاب مهماً لأنه يعرفنا بمفكري الاعتزال وتوجهاتهم في هذه الفترة المتأخرة نسبياً، فهو مهم أيضاً لانه يعرض علاقات المعتزلة بالفلسفة والفلاسفة، ثم هو مهم ومهم جداً لأنه وثيقة معتزلية نادرة عن البنى الداخلية للاتجاه وصراعات مدارسه إبان فترة تأليفه. ومعلوم أن مصنفات المعتزلة التي وصلتنا ما تزال قليلة نسبياً وأن كل إضافة في هذا المجال حقيقة بالاهتمام والدراسة. وقد حاول المحققان اللذان اعتمدا على نسخة وحيدة مخطوطة أن يخرجا نصاً دقيقاً وصحيحاً غير مثقل بالهوامش والتعليقات، محيلين على المقدمة التمهيدية التي درسا فيها الكتاب بشكل موجز.
إن هذا النص النيسابوري المغمور نسبياً في مصاف كبار رجال المذهب المعتزلي المتأخرين من أمثال الكعبي (الذي كان مرجع النيسابوري الرئيسي) والقاضي عبد الجبار بن أحمد، وأبي هاشم الجبائي.
