إن المدعوين الذين كانوا في ذلك المساء عند فرجنسكس ( وأكثرهم رجال) يتظاهرون بأنهم اجتمعوا عرضا ومصادفة. لم يكن ثمة عشاء ولا موائد للعب. غير أن مائدتين مغاطتين بغطاء غير نظيف جدا كانت قد ضمتا احداهما إلى الأخرى في وصط الصالون المفروشة جدرانه بورق أزرق قديم وعليها سماوران يغلى ماؤهما إلى جانب صينية كبيرة محملة خمسة وعشرين كأسا وسلة ملائ بقطع من خبر ابيض كالذي يقدم في المدارس الداخلية للبنات والبنين وكانت اخت ربة الدار هى التى تصب الشاي وهى عانس في نحو الثلاثين من العمر ليس لها حاجبان وشعرها مصفر اللون انسانة صموت لا تتكلم ولا تضمر لأحد حبا تعتنق الافكار الجديدة ويخشاها فرجنسكي نفسه في سره لم يكن في الصالون من النساء الا ثلاث: السيدة فرجنكسى ، واختها واخت السيد فرجنسكي التى وصلت من بطرسبرج منذ هنية ولم يتسع وقتها بعد حتى لتغيير ملابسها.
