وجدت المهن التعليمية منذ القدم وقد تطورت هذه المهن حيث تشهد بذلك الدراسات السوسيولوجية التي أجريت في العقود الأخيرة. والمعلم المهني هو الشخص الذي تتوفر لديه كفايات نوعية متخصصة تقوم على قاعدة معارف عقلانية مسلم بصحتها. وهي مستمدة من العلم ولإعداد المعلم المهني متطلبات وشروط كثيرة لا بد منها كي يحصل المعلم على الكفاية المهنية التي تؤهله لاستخدامها كخبير.
ويسعى هذا الكتاب إلى توضيح معنى الكفاية المهنية وكيفية اكتسابها وكيفية تنظيمها. حيث سيقوم اثنا عشر باحثاً ومكوناً من بلجيكا وفرنسا وسويسرا بالإجابة على هذه الأسئلة. على ضوء البحوث التي أجراها كل منهم في بلده وعلى ضوء الممارسات الخاصة لكل منهم في مجال تكوين المعلمين. يتألف الكتاب من عشرة فصول، يتناول الفصل الأول كفايات المعلم المهني حيث تقترح مارغريت آلتي تفكراً عاماً في سيرورات بناء معارف المعلمين وكفاياتهم المهنية، كما أنها تقترح أن تنطلق عملية تطوير مهارة التحليل لدى المعلمين من الممارسات تقترح أن تنطلق عملية تطوير مهارة التحليل لدى المعلمين من الممارسات وبشكل يؤدي إلى الربط بين سيورات ثلاثة: التكوين والعمل والبحث، التعليم ضمن المهني التي تعني بالإنسان.
وتركز فاينغولد في الفصل السابع على تحليل العمل الوظائفي لمعلمين خبراء في مواقف صفية وتبرز خصائص الكفايات الداعمة لـ (التأمل في العمل) وفي الفصل الثامن يوضح ليوبولد باكي وماري سيسيل أن تحديد كفايات المعلمين يرتبط بالنموذج المهنية وهما يقترحان إطاراً عاماً يساعد على تحديد مواقع وأهداف لممارسات تكوين المعلمين واستراتيجيتها. بينما يحاول فيليب بيرثو في الفصل التاسع على مسألة العمل على "التعود" في تكوين المعلمين ويسعى إلى تحديد طبيعة الكفايات المهنية في جوهرها، وفي الفصل العاشر يحاول موريس تارديف وكليرمون فوتيي تبين وجهة نظر معارضة رأي فيليب بيرنو.
