مدينة المرية من المدن الإسلامية الهامة التي أسسها المسلمون في الأندلس، فقد كانت أعظم قواعد أسطول الأندلس في عصر الخلافة الأموية وعصر الطوائف، والمركز التجاري الأول للتجارة البحرية مع أقطار البحر الأبيض المتوسط، وكانت إلى جانب ذلك أهم مراكز صناعة المنسوجات الحريرية في الأندلس في العصر الإسلامي.
كذلك لعبت المرية في عصر الطوائف دوراً سياسياً وحربياً خطيراً، لا يقل بأي حال من الأحوال عن الدور الذي لعبته مدينة أشبيلية في عصر الموحدين، أو قرطبة في عصر الخلافة، وكانت المنفذ الوحيد لمملكة غرناطة، بعد أن تقلص ملك الإسلام في الأندلس، وأصبح يقتصر على مملكة غرناطة، فإليها كانت تصل الإمدادات والمؤن من بلاد المغرب في القرن الخامس عشر الميلادي، وعليها كانت تعتمد مملكة غرناطة إعتماداً كبيراً في وصول المجاهدين المغاربة، ولذلك كان سقوط المرية في أيدي القشتاليين في سنة 1490م نذيراً بسقوط غرناطة آخر معقل للإسلام في الأندلس بعد مضي عامي فقط.
ومع ذلك، لم يدرس المؤرخون تاريخ هذه المدينة الجليل، فكل ما كُتب عن تاريخها وآثارها لا يعدو أبحاثاً قصيرة متفرقة، لذلك عمل المؤلف السيد عبد العزيز سالم على دراسة تاريخ المرية دراسة كاملة، ورسم صورة متكاملة عن حضارتها في العصر الإسلامي، وقسم بحثه إلى أربعة فصول: الأول: يتضمن بناءالمرية وأهميتها في العصر الإسلامي كقاعدة للأسطول الأندلسي، والثاني، يشتمل على موجز لتاريخها منذ إنشائها حتى إستيلاء جيوش فرناندو الكاثوليكي عليها، والثالث، يشتمل على دراسة النظام العمراني للمدينة وأهم آثارها الباقية، أما الفصل الرابع والأخير فقد بحثت فيه الحياة التجارية بالمرية، وأهم الصناعات التي اشتهرت بها، وأخيراً الحياة الفكرية في المرية في العصر الإسلامي.
