إن كل كنيسة من الكنائس الشرقية كنيسة ذات حق خاص وتخضع بناء على تنظيمها المشترك لمجموعة قوانين الكنائس الشرقية ولقانونها الخاص الذي يمكن إدراجه ضمن مجموعة قوانين خاصة، غير أن الاعتراف بالكنائس ذات الحق الخاص يتم من قبل السلطة الكنسية العليا، وينتج عن هذا الاعتراف شراكة تسلسلية مع الحبر الروماني وذلك بمفهومه الموحد للكنيسة.
وفي هذا المجلد يقوم عدد من المؤلفين، شرحاً وافياً لمجموعة قوانين الكنائس الشرقية بكاملها، مستوحين النص العربي من الترجمة الفرنسية والنص الإيطالي، والقوانين الحالية هي عبارة عن تكييف لقوانين سبقتها وقد أشرفت لجنة شكلها الحبر الأعظم على أعمال تدوين المجموعة وتمت طباعتها عام 1944.
كما صدرت بعد ذلك مجموعة من القوانين وصولاً إلى عام 1957 حيث صدرت قوانين الطقوس الشرقية والأشخاص بالإدارة الرسولية. وفي حقيقة الأمر أن المجموعة القانونية تعد حصيلة أكثر من قرن ونصف من البحث والتجميع والعمل والتشاور. وسيعمد مؤلفو هذا الكتاب إلى الإطلالة الدقيقة على تلك القوانين لمعرفة مصادرها البعيدة وهي أساس كل تفسير ومرتكز كل إيضاح. وهذا يعني إعطاء التفسيرات والتعليقات الواضحة للقوانين. وهو أمر ذو أهمية بالغة حيث ينتفع من هذا الكتاب من يحرص على علاقة سليمة بكنيسته ومجتمعه.
