يظلُّ كتاب التوراة بأسفاره الإثنين والعشرين المصدر الأساسي لتاريخ الشعب العبري، وسنأخذ في الحسبان أيضاً، بالنسبة إلى العصور القديمة، المعطيات الأثرية والكتابات السامية والأكادية والمصرية في شمالي - غربي البلاد.
يلجأ المؤرخون التقليديون، منذ العصر الفارسي، إلى وثائق لا يُستهان بها، وبإستطاعتنا أن نضمَّ إليها، فيما يخصُّ المرحلة الأحداث عهداً، أعمال المؤرخ اليهودي فلافيوس يوسف وأعمال فيلون الإسكندري والكتابات المنحولة والنقوش المزيفة، كما أنَّنا نُضيف إليها نصوص قمران والعهد الجديد والتلمود.
