نهض هذا البحث ليتلمس صورة المكان في شعر "أحمد عبد المعطي حجازي" لما للمكان من أهمية قصوى في الكشف عن حدة الأزمة التي يعاني منها الإنسان؛ والمتأمل في قصائد الشاعر يرى أنها إنعكاس لمعاناته وتمزقه؛ ويمكن أن تضع قصائده في طليعة المواقف المعبرة عن آلام الشعب العربي وتجاربه النضالية، والمصورة لغربة الإنسان المقهور الذي اختار طريقة إلى الحرية والبناء الإشتراكي.
ويقع البحث في مدخل وتمهيد وفصلين؛ فأما المدخل فيتناول حياة الشاعر لما لها من أثر في شعره، أما التمهيد، فيتناول مفهوم المكان في اللغة والفلسفة والفن للولوج من خلال هذا المفهوم لتحديد صور المكان في شعر حجازي؛ ويبحث الفصل الأول في صور المكان؛ وهي قسمان: الأمكنة الرئيسة: القرية، والمدينة، إذ رسم الشاعر صورة القرية والمدينة من خلال لحظات صراع عاشها، وما زال، فشكلا عالمين متناقضين: فردوس وجحيم.
وشمل هذا الفصل الحديث عن الأمكنة العربية، وكان حب الشاعر لوطنه وإنتماؤه السياسي يمحوران رؤيته لمصر، أما رسمه للأقطار والمدن العربية والغربية فقد كان من خلال حبه للوحدة العربية، وإحساسه بالضياع العربي، وبكائه على الأمجاد العربية السالفة، ومن هذا المنطلق مجد الزعماء والسياسيين والثوار وأنشد للوحدة العربية، ورسم معالم مدينة فاضلة يعود الإنسان فيها إلى ذاته ويتغلب على واقعه المشين؛ وفي الفصل قسم تناول الأمكنة الفرعية كالبيت والسجن والسوق الشارع والقبر والكهف والمقهى والميدان لما لها من دور في تشكيل صورة الأمكنة الرئيسة.
وأما الفصل الثاني فيتمحور حول الزمان وعلاقته بالمكان بحيث أوضح تطور رؤية الشاعر للمكان وفق معايير زمانية خاصة، وكان لعلاقة الزمان بالمكان وبالشخصية دور فاعل في الإيحاء بمكنونات الشاعر الداخلية، ولعله إستطاع أن يعيد تركيب العالم من جديد وفق ما يحلم به، وهو ينتهي بتحليل قصيدة (طللية) للشاعر من ديوان أشجار الإسمنت لتأكيد دور المكان وأهميته عنصراً فاعلاً في الأدب.
